Glossary of Terms in My Slain Dragon Bride
July 17, 2026
A complete glossary of magic terminology, ranks, and key phrases used throughout My Slain Dragon Bride — circles, dragons, the noble council, and more.
Glossary of Terms in My Slain Dragon Bride
This page collects the in-universe terminology used across My Slain Dragon Bride. Use it as a reference while reading — every term here appears (or will appear) in the manhwa.
Magic & Rank
Circle (서클)
The unit of magical attainment in the world of the manhwa. A mage’s Circle is their rank, from the lowest (1st) to the apex (9th). Higher Circles unlock stronger spells, longer ranges, and access to restricted libraries.
9th Circle (9서클)
The highest tier of magic in the world, spoken of as the realm of a demigod. Only those who hold a dragon’s heart can sit at the 9th Circle. In the original novel the title 9서클 대마법사 literally translates to 9th Circle Great Mage. Perda holds this title at the start of the rewind.
Great Mage (대마법사)
A mage who has ascended beyond the practical limitations of an ordinary human lifespan. Reaching Great Mage rank usually requires reaching at least the 7th Circle. The protagonist, Perda, is referred to as a Great Mage at the start of the story.
Heart Key (마력의 열쇠)
The colloquial term for the dragon heart that unlocks the 9th Circle. The heart is treated by the magic order as a resource, not a tragedy. Loss of a heart key is treated as a career-ending event — even when the mage still has the heart inside their body.
Dragons
Crimson Dragon / Red Dragon (발드로바)
The single dragon whose heart unlocks the 9th Circle. Also referred to as Valdrova when the dragon takes human form, and as the public king in the engagement announcement that opens the second timeline. Centuries old. Weary. Quiet.
Dragon Slayer (용 사냥꾼)
A mage trained to fight dragons. Most slayers pursue the heart for its power; a few pursue it out of duty. The protagonist’s training lineage treats dragons as resources to be claimed, not people to be mourned.
Dragon Lair (용의 둥지)
The location of the final battle in Timeline A. The lair is where Valdrova surrenders, and where the protagonist takes his heart.
Political & Social
Noble Council (귀족 회의)
The aristocratic body that orders the protagonist’s engagement to the public king Valdrova. They frame the marriage as a death sentence; they expect her to refuse.
Public King (공왕)
A ceremonial/political title for a dragon who has chosen a human form. In the second timeline, Valdrova is announced as a public king — the title the nobles use to dress the marriage up as a political arrangement rather than a dragon pact.
Engagement Announcement (약혼 발표)
The inciting event of Timeline B. The nobles deliver it as a sentence: become engaged to the public king Valdrova. The protagonist’s reply — “Understood” — is the single line the fandom quotes the most.
Time-Travel Terms
Rewind (회귀)
The genre convention used to send the protagonist back in time. In My Slain Dragon Bride the rewind is not voluntary — Perda is sent back to the engagement announcement after the events of Timeline A conclude.
Timeline A (원래 시간선)
The “first life.” The protagonist climbs to the 9th Circle, kills Valdrova, takes his heart, and discovers victory tastes like ash. Timeline A is where the manhwa opens.
Timeline B (두 번째 시간선)
The “second chance.” The protagonist is sent back to the day of the engagement announcement and answers differently. Timeline B runs alongside the Timeline A chapters in the manhwa, interweaving the two narratives.
Themes & Motifs
Bitter Aftertaste (쓴맛)
The recurring phrase the protagonist uses to describe the feeling of taking Valdrova’s heart. It is the manhwa’s signature image for what victory over the wrong enemy feels like.
Ancient Despair (오래된 절망)
The depth of Valdrova’s exhaustion as he surrenders his heart. The novel describes it as older and deeper than the hatred she had carried. The phrase has become shorthand in the fandom for what the manhwa is really about.
Heart Inside the Chest (가슴 속 심장)
The image that recurs across Timeline A: the protagonist carries Valdrova’s heart inside her own body. Whether the heart retains consciousness is the central open question of the serialization.
Author & Publication Terms
Bonsainamu (분재나무)
The web-novel author of Naega Jugin Deuraegon-gwa Gyeolhonhaetda. The novel serialized on 소설넷 and has since concluded.
Jelling (젤링)
The artist for the manhwa adaptation on Naver Webtoon. Jelling provides the visual storytelling for the story Bonsainamu wrote.
Naver Webtoon (네이버 웹툰)
The official Korean publisher of the manhwa. New chapters release on a weekly cadence; six chapters are available as of mid-July 2026.
Reading Glossary Tips
- When the manhwa mentions the 9th Circle, it usually means the magic system — not a literal place.
- When it mentions the heart, it can mean Valdrova’s literal heart, the protagonist’s metaphorical heart, or the 9th Circle’s “key” — context matters.
- Timeline A and Timeline B are written to be read together, in published order. Reading them separately will spoil the structural reveal.
